This was a week of trauma, it was baby's first NCECA !! Honestly, the conference made me realize how lucky I am to have attended the institutions that shaped me into the maker that I am. UF and WVU gave me the opportunity to meet so many incredible people and getting to see them all under new circumstances felt incredible. IUS folks kept telling me that I seemed popular lol. I guess I didn't realize how many clay freaks have been in my life ! But anyway all the images are just some of my favorite pieces that I viewed. I mostly listened to lectures and really enjoyed "Reviving Muysca Metallurgy in Colombia," it really reminded me of my love of mesoamerican ceramics and inspired me to incorporate more metal into my work. Similarly reminds me of this piece by Shaya Ishaq. It seems so simple but I am obsessed with the use of hardware to hang it. This piece pictured above (unfortunately did not write down the artists name!) made me think more about textiles and how to get them involved with my clay work. Over the summer I got really into embroidery and have been wondering how to cross those two making techniques over into one another, so I kinda want to try something like this !! Another lecture that I loved was "Ceramics in the Expanded Field," with some of my UF folks. It was nice to hear about a more in depth discussion on sculpture and practice, to remember that the art world at large is not all about ceramics, the way ceramic artists are. I am absolutely enraptured by this piece by Trisha Kyner. Really inspiring, I love the idea of creating a metal frame for my ceramics to be displayed and fuck it man I will make something similar to this !

Finally bisque fired the boys ! 2 out of 3 are looking good. The first / bottom one ended up warping real bad, and because I didn't lift up the kiln shelf enough / add a baffle brick one side of it got BLASTED, literally looks cone 6 crispy. I am slightly worried that it stuck to the brick that sitting inside of it. But we will deal with that when I unload. I had this plan to cover the clay with that beautiful black flux glaze to make it look latex, but damn when you see that pretty terra cotta come out you wan to leave it the fuck alone ! Another day where I completely exhaust myself !!
the wood kiln shift was 8am-4pm. I got a sun burn :( But I am proud of myself and Autumn holding it down for 8 hours !! I spent like 30 minutes totally alone with the old kiln and it was literally trial by fire. A guy like me is gunna use a power tool. Thankfully I now have a proper means of learning to use some fun shit ! I bought this THICK ass chain from good ol' lowes and sawed up one link using the grinder. Then I flattened it using a larger grinder, and finally cut up some nails so they were short enough to not go all the way through the wood, and welded them to the chain. At first I was going to simply glue the chain to the wood but mr. Scott recommended that I really get in there with some nails, I am very grateful for the suggestion because that wood is absolutely attached without any glue! My little wooden man has been covered in 4 delicious coats of polyurethane, I used the boat varnish that Lalana recommended to me like a year ago lol. Its Rust-Oleum Marine Coatings Spar Varnish. I had previously attempted to flock the piece just using spray adhesive, then hated that and sanded it off. Then tried to flock it using wood glue, hated that and sanded it off. I realized that the adhesive was soaking into the wood and not sticking properly because I didn't seal the wood ! Hopefully with these coats of poly it will be nice and ready to get some flock stuck to it.
